This 100% Java coffee comes from Kusillo, a 10.3-hectare farm owned by Pedro Rodriguez and his family in Bolinda, Caranavi, Bolivia. Over the past decade, Pedro has played a key role in developing Bolivia's specialty coffee industry by supporting local farmers with better processing methods, selective harvesting, and quality-focused production.
As Bolivia's coffee industry declined due to factors such as leaf rust, ageing plantations, poor farming practices, and the shift to coca cultivation, the Rodriguez family invested in their own farms to help secure the future of Bolivian coffee. Today, their Fincas Los Rodriguez project comprises 12 farms spanning around 130 hectares, where scientific farming methods, extensive variety trials, and meticulous farm management produce high-quality, sustainable coffee.
Kusillo, planted in 2015 with Java and Red Caturra varieties, benefits from its high elevation (1,468 metres), which allows cherries to mature slowly and develop greater sweetness and complexity. During harvest, trained local pickers selectively handpick only ripe cherries through multiple passes.
After harvest, the coffee is processed at the Rodriguez family's Buena Vista mill, where it is sorted by density, pulped, and dry fermented for approximately 46 hours. It is then dried on raised beds before finishing in a low-temperature mechanical dryer to a final moisture content of 11.5%. Finally, the coffee is rested and meticulously milled and hand-sorted at Agricafe's La Luna dry mill, ensuring exceptional quality and consistency.
