Coffee was introduced to Tanzania from Réunion Island and became an important export after the 19th century. However, the industry faced setbacks due to coffee wilt disease and environmental challenges, which slowed growth and required gradual recovery. Today, support from Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Societies (AMCOS) and foreign investment in research and sustainability have strengthened the sector.
Igale coffee comes from the Igale AMCOS in the Mbozi district of Songwe in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands. While the cooperative traditionally collected home-processed coffee, investment in an eco-pulper in 2019 has enabled them to produce fully washed coffee and gain greater control over processing.
